Is Cotton Eco friendly and does can it be used for composting?
100% cotton is a natural fibre that is made from the seed pods of the Gossypium plant, it is renewable, sustainable and biodegradable therefore is ecologically friendly and can be used for composting. It generally takes around 6 months to decompose.
The best way to decompose 100% cotton is to cut or rip it up into small pieces, this allows the degrading process to occur faster.
If you are considering using cotton on a compost heap ensure that the fabric is 100% cotton as poly cotton which contains polyester will not decompose.
