Many perceive ‘Trick or Treating’ to be a modern Americanism picked up in the UK in recent years, however it was practised in medieval times up to the 1930’s. Children in costume would visit the rich, in other parishes, to beg for coins and food, and would pray for the soul of the givers and their friends in return. The modern day does see an innovation in the fancy dress and paraphenalia, probably influenced by some scary films produced over the years !! Remember to have a bag of goodies by the door on the 31st October…better to treat than be tricked ?
